WATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS

The Right Treatment Starts With the Water.

Water-treatment equipment is designed to solve specific problems. A water softener, iron filter, reverse osmosis system and UV system all do very different things — and no single technology is the right answer for every water source.

Air & Water provides residential, commercial and community water-treatment systems selected around the water chemistry, water source, flow requirements and how the water will be used.

UNDERSTAND THE OPTIONS

Different Problems Require Different Treatment.

The equipment comes after the problem is understood. Some water systems require only one treatment process. Others may require several treatment stages working together.

HARD WATER TREATMENT

Water Softening

Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. As water is used and heated, these minerals can contribute to scale on fixtures, appliances, water heaters and throughout plumbing systems.

Ion-exchange water softeners reduce hardness by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions in the water for sodium or potassium ions.

A properly selected softener considers:

  • Water hardness
  • Household or facility water usage
  • Peak flow requirements
  • Iron or manganese that may also be present
  • Available plumbing and water pressure
  • Regeneration requirements

Residential to Progressive-Flow Systems

Air & Water provides water softening systems ranging from residential single-tank units to duplex, triplex and progressive-flow configurations for larger applications.

STAINING & DISCOLOURATION

Iron & Manganese Treatment

Iron and manganese can appear in different forms in water, and those differences matter when selecting treatment.

Depending on the water chemistry and concentration, treatment may involve water softening, oxidation, specialized filtration or a combination of processes.

A treatment system should be selected based on what is actually present in the water — not simply whether the stain is orange or black.

Treatment approaches may include:

  • Water softening for suitable applications
  • Oxidation and filtration
  • Air-injection systems
  • Specialized filtration media
  • Multi-stage treatment where required

CHEMICAL-FREE IRON FILTRATION

Iron King

Iron King is designed to reduce iron in suitable well-water applications using oxidation and specialized filtration media.

Unlike traditional iron-removal systems that regenerate using chemical oxidants such as potassium permanganate, the Iron King does not require a chemical regenerant.

Why Iron King?

  • No salt required for the iron-removal process
  • No continuously fed chemical oxidant
  • Automatic backwashing
  • Designed for well-water iron treatment
  • Locally supplied and serviced by Air & Water

Iron King is not the right treatment for every iron problem. Water chemistry, iron concentration, manganese, pH and other water-quality conditions should be considered before selecting an iron-treatment system.

SEDIMENT, TURBIDITY, COLOUR, TASTE & ODOUR

Water Filtration

Water filtration can range from simple cartridge filters to larger media filters and membrane filtration systems. Different approaches may be used for sediment, turbidity, colour, taste and odour, natural organic matter and other water-quality concerns.

The appropriate filtration method depends on what's in the water and what the treatment is intended to accomplish.

DISSOLVED CONTAMINANTS

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis uses a membrane to reduce a wide range of dissolved substances in water. It is commonly used for drinking and cooking water where point-of-use treatment is appropriate.

Depending on the water chemistry and treatment objective, reverse osmosis may be considered for concerns such as elevated dissolved solids, nitrate, arsenic or sulphate.

MICROBIOLOGICAL TREATMENT

UV & Disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection uses UV light to inactivate susceptible microorganisms as water passes through the reactor.

Effective UV treatment depends on appropriate equipment sizing, water quality and pretreatment. UV addresses microbiological concerns; it does not remove dissolved chemical contaminants, hardness or other substances from the water.

Other Disinfection Approaches

For some applications, chlorination or other disinfection processes may be more appropriate or may be used as part of a multi-barrier treatment system. Air & Water can help assess the water source, treatment objectives and existing equipment to determine what approach should be considered.

WHEN STANDARD TREATMENT ISN'T ENOUGH

Some Water Requires a More Specific Approach.

Some water-quality concerns require more specialized treatment. Depending on the water chemistry and application, this may include treatment for arsenic and other contaminants, oxidation, chlorination, specialized media or other application-specific processes.

These systems are selected according to the conditions present and the treatment objective.

WHEN ONE PROCESS ISN'T ENOUGH

Sometimes the Treatment Is a Process — Not a Product.

Some water sources require more than one treatment process. Pretreatment may be needed to protect downstream equipment, and different treatment stages may address different water-quality concerns.

The order of treatment matters. A properly configured system considers how each stage affects the equipment that follows it.

SERVICE & REPAIR

Good Equipment Still Needs Service.

Water-treatment equipment changes as it ages — and so can the water being treated.

Air & Water services a wide range of residential and commercial water-treatment systems, including equipment we did not originally install.

Services include:

If an existing system isn't producing the water it used to, our first question isn't automatically how to replace it. We look at what has changed and whether the existing equipment can be returned to proper operation.

UNDERSTAND THE WATER. THEN TREAT IT.

The Equipment Comes After the Water

We consider the water chemistry, water use, flow requirements and treatment objective before recommending equipment.

Sometimes the appropriate solution is one treatment step. Sometimes several are required. And sometimes treatment may not be necessary at all.
